ISLAMABAD: A layer of dense fog enveloped parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday morning, affecting traffic on motorways.
A Motorway spokesperson said that the Motorway M1 from Burhan to Peshawar has been shut down for all types of traffic after low visibility was recorded.
Similarly, the motorway (M1) from Thokar Niaz Baig to Khanqah Dogran has also been closed for all kinds of traffic until further orders due to reduced visibility due to smog and fog.
The M3 from Faizpur to Rajana and the M11 from Mehmood Booti to Sambial have been closed to all traffic.
The Motorway police have advised the drivers to use Grand Trunk (GT) Road for travelling if necessary. They have also urged the drivers to drive slowly and switch on fog lights.
The Motorway police have also requested the people to stay home and avoid unnecessary travelling.
Yesterday, Lahore experienced its coldest day of the winter season on Thursday, as the temperature dropped to a chilly 4 degrees centigrade (°C).
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), cold and dry weather will persist in Lahore and across most parts of Punjab through Thursday night and into Friday and Saturday.
The PMD reports that continental air prevails over much of Pakistan, contributing to the cold spell. Lahore’s minimum temperature is forecasted to range between 4°C and 6°C on Friday, dipping further to 3°C to 5°C on Saturday.
The cold weather should also include Murree, Galiyat, and adjoining areas. Dense fog and smog patches are likely during the night and early morning hours in cities like Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Kasur, Okara, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ghazi Khan. During the very early morning hours, there is a possibility of frost in the Pothohar region and some areas of plain.
