RAWALPINDI: Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Rawalpindi Wednesday rejected the acquittal plea filed by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Omar Ayub Khan in the GHQ attack case.
A day earlier, he had resigned from his position as a member of the Judicial Commission due to the cases filed against him.
The court had reserved its verdict on the PTI leader’s plea on Tuesday.
Thousands of workers of the PTI took to the streets on May 9, 2023 in nearly all major cities of the country after Imran Khan was arrested by the anti-corruption watchdog in the 190-million-pound corruption case.
During the protests, PTI leaders and supporters allegedly attacked military and government installations including General Headquarters (GHQ) Rawalpindi, PAF Air Base Mianwali, and Radio Pakistan Peshawar office.
After the violent riots, hundreds of PTI workers and senior leaders were put behind bars for their involvement and cases were registered against its leaders including Imran Khan ad Omar Ayub Khan.
Omar Ayub secures interim bail
Yesterday, the Anti-Terrorism Court ATC) granted interim bail to Omar Ayub and MNA Sher Afzal Marwat in a case filed over their party’s D-Chowk protest.
During the hearing, ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra inquired about his involvement in the case. Later the court granted him bail against bonds worth Rs5,000 each.
Earlier on Tuesday, Omar Ayub resigned from his position as a member of the Judicial Commission due to the cases filed against him.
According to the opposition leader, the current legal channels are a hindrance to the effective performance of the Judicial Commission. It is in the interest of the organisation that I nominate someone else in my place who can give full attention to this important role.
Omar Ayub has requested the Speaker National Assembly to accept my resignation soon and appoint Barrister Gohar as a member of the Judicial Commission.
