WEB DESK: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif officially inaugurated the Honhaar Scholarship Programme at Punjab University, Lahore, aimed at providing opportunities for brilliant students to secure admissions in top-ranking public and private universities across Pakistan.
Speaking at the launch event, she emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring quality education and empowering the youth.
CM Maryam stated that the initiative would make institutions like LUMS, FAST, and other premier medical colleges accessible to deserving students, fulfilling a long-held dream for many. Highlighting her vision, she remarked, “I want to see books in the hands of youth instead of stones, bullets, and shells.” She also stressed the importance of civility, noting that an educated individual must also learn to communicate respectfully.
Scholarships with a focus on gender equity
The Honhaar Scholarship Programme includes 30,000 scholarships, with 60 per cent reserved for female students. Out of the total, 18,000 scholarships will go to girls, and 12,000 to boys, ensuring gender equity. CM Maryam assured that the selection process is purely merit-based, stating, “No student can complain about a violation of merit.” She reaffirmed that political affiliations, whether with PPP, PML-N, or PTI, would not affect eligibility for the program.
Support for education and innovation
In addition to scholarships, CM Maryam announced the relaunch of the laptop scheme in January 2025 for high-performing students to facilitate their educational pursuits. Addressing youth mobility, she revealed that 10,000 electric bikes have already been distributed, with plans to deliver another 20,000 e-bikes soon.
To counter unemployment and brain drain, the government aims to introduce interest-free loans for students to establish businesses upon completing their education. CM Maryam also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the quality of education and curriculum, with initiatives like the development of Nawaz Internet City in Lahore, which will host campuses of renowned international universities.
Commitment to merit and youth empowerment
The Punjab government, she asserted, maintains meritocracy across all sectors, including appointments of key officials such as deputy commissioners and secretaries. “Scholarships are not an act of kindness but a rightful opportunity for competent students,” she declared.
