Pakistan recorded second driest May in 63 years

According to the Met office’s data, May 2024 was recorded as the second driest May since 1961, with rainfall 66% below average.

The data revealed that May 2024 had an average rainfall of 5mm, compared to the previous record of 3.6mm set in 1988.

On May 13, 2024, Kakul (KP) experienced the highest single-day rainfall of 56.0mm. Throughout the month, Kakul also recorded the highest total rainfall, amounting to 63.0mm.

According to the Met Office data, Pakistan’s national mean monthly temperature in May 2024 was 30.44°C, which is 1.50°C higher than the average of 28.94°C. The daytime maximum temperature averaged 38.33°C, showing an anomaly of +2.07°C from the normal 36.26°C.

Similarly, the nighttime minimum temperature was 22.49°C, 1.37°C above the average of 21.12°C.

In May 2024, the hottest day was experienced at Mohenjo-Daro, Sindh, with a scorching maximum temperature of 52.5°C on May 26th. Meanwhile, Jacobabad, also in Sindh, was identified as the warmest place throughout the month, with a mean monthly maximum temperature of 46.7°C.

On the other end of the spectrum, the coldest night temperature of -1.5°C was recorded at Kalam, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, on May 1st, coinciding with its status as the coolest place with a mean monthly minimum temperature of 6.8°C.
