Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Friday revealed that the country experienced its “wettest April since 1961”. According to PMD, Pakistan received 59.3 millimetres of rainfall in the month of April, “excessively above” the normal average of 22.5 millimetres.
The PMD’s monthly climate report further revealed that at least 144 individuals lost their lives in thunderstorms and house collapses due to heavy rains. “Climate change is a major factor that is influencing the erratic weather patterns in our region,” PMD spokesperson Zaheer Ahmad Babar said.
The report stated that Pakistan’s national monthly temperature for April was also 0.87C lower than the average of 24.54C. Balochistan received 437% more rainfall than the average last month.

According to the report, 84 individuals lost their lives in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including 38 children, and more than 3,500 homes were damaged. Moreover, heavy rains and hailstorms also caused damage to the wheat harvest in Punjab.
