Pakistan commemorates inaugural international Markhor day

WEB DESK: The United Nations General Assembly, spearheaded by Pakistan and eight other nations, has unanimously passed a resolution designating May 24 as the International Day of the Markhor.

This resolution underscores the crucial ecological significance of preserving the Markhor, a species labeled as “near threatened” since 2014, along with its natural habitat.

Renowned for its spiral horns, the Markhor holds a pivotal role in the ecosystem. Mohamed Yahya, the UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan hailed the global importance of Markhors declaring them not only as Pakistan’s national treasure but also as a global asset.

He highlighted the species’ potential to enhance economic growth, foster conservation endeavors, and promote sustainable tourism, aligning with the Government’s ‘Living Indus’ initiative, endorsed by the United Nations.

The Markhor population in Pakistan has witnessed a positive trajectory over the past decade, with numbers now estimated between 3,500 and 5,000, owing to proactive conservation initiatives and community involvement. However, on a global scale, Markhor populations continue to dwindle, with less than 6,000 mature individuals remaining.

Native to the mountainous terrains of Central and South Asia, including Pakistan, the Markhor faces numerous threats to its survival, including habitat degradation, illegal hunting, poaching, and the adverse impacts of climate change.

Recognized for its adept climbing skills, the Markhor navigates steep, inhabiting elevations ranging from 600 to 3,500 meters.

The resolution advocates for worldwide celebrations and concerted conservation actions, stressing the imperative of international and regional collaboration.
