The higher education sector in Pakistan is facing a critical issue, with 65 universities across the country currently operating without permanent vice-chancellors.

The situation is especially dire in Punjab, where 29 universities are functioning without a permanent vice-chancellor. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) faces similar challenges, with 22 universities lacking permanent leadership.

Meanwhile, Balochistan and Sindh have five and three universities, respectively, without a vice-chancellor in place.

The lack of permanent vice-chancellors is severely disrupting both the administrative and educational functions of these universities. Reliance on temporary leadership has led to governance challenges and operational difficulties.

To tackle this issue, a committee was formed in Punjab on June 1 to appoint vice-chancellors. The committee is actively working to fill these key positions, with expectations that the universities in Punjab will have permanent leadership appointed in the coming days.
