The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has warned of a significant increase in electricity tariffs in the upcoming months. This announcement came on Thursday as the authority noted a 20 percent drop in overall electricity consumption across the country.
During a public hearing regarding the Quarterly Tariff Adjustments (QTAs), officials from NEPRA and the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G) discussed the negative adjustment of 58 paisa per unit for August 2024.

However, the net effect will be a 20 paisa per unit adjustment due to a previous negative adjustment of 37 paisa per unit from July 2024, which will be resolved in September.
Dr. Fayyaz Chaudhry, Chairman of the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC), explained that the decline in electricity usage is due to overcapacity in generation, inadequate transmission infrastructure, and the unplanned setup of power plants in the south.
He emphasised the need for a coordinated approach to tackle the country’s electricity challenges.
