Federal Minister for Energy, Awais Laghari, announced that a proposal for prepaid electricity meters is under consideration. During a press conference in Multan, he stated that just as mobile phones have prepaid systems, a similar system should be available for electricity meters.
Laghari highlighted the government’s efforts to reduce electricity theft, which he described as unacceptable. He added that steps are being taken to minimize losses from electricity theft compared to last year, and to provide relief to electricity consumers.

The minister also highlighted ongoing measures to address the challenges faced by the power sector and assured that relief will be extended to the common man. He also talked about ongoing discussions with power distribution companies to ensure that a relief package worth Rs. 45 billion reaches every consumer.
The minister further pointed out that the capacity payments have doubled due to the devaluation of the rupee, but expressed optimism that electricity prices will significantly decrease within the next year. He also revealed plans to visit companies in Sindh and Balochistan within the next week or two.
