WEB DESK: In Pakistan private medical colleges have charged students millions of rupees in additional annual fees, making the five-year MBBS program cost up to 4.5 million rupees. The five-year fee has now reached 15.873 million rupees.

Furthermore, through the illegal collection of fees, up to 900,000 rupees have been charged annually in excess from MBBS students. Private medical colleges continue to seriously violate Supreme Court decisions.

Former caretaker health minister Nadeem Jan was in the process of getting the illegal fees refunded from medical colleges when the government was dissolved, and the matter has since been buried in PMDC files.

Moreover, there are more than 70 private medical colleges in the country, most of which have significantly increased fees without government approval. Former caretaker health minister Nadeem Jan had taken notice of the rising MBBS fees.

Before the admissions for the 2024 session, a committee was formed to reduce the fees, proposing a five-year MBBS fee of up to 10 million rupees.

Dr. Nadeem Jan wanted further reductions in fees, but private medical colleges started admissions and began charging arbitrary fees without PMDC approval. Some charged an additional 500,000 rupees annually, some 700,000, and some up to 900,000 rupees. Consequently, instead of reducing, private medical college fees across the country increased by almost 40%.
