Maria B urges young women to avoid modelling

WEB DESK: Renowned fashion designer Maria B has expressed serious concerns about young women entering the Pakistani modelling industry, citing a lack of ethical working environments.

In a recent interview, Maria B highlighted societal limitations that often prevent girls from pursuing modelling careers. “Many girls can’t get permission from their families,” she explained.

The designer advised against joining the modelling industry, noting, “There are definitely decent and family-oriented photographers who create a comfortable atmosphere for girls, but unfortunately, there are also disturbing incidents that occur in the industry, affecting both male and female models.”

Maria B also discussed the financial aspects of the modelling industry, noting the scarcity of female models in Pakistan, which allows them to charge higher rates compared to their foreign counterparts. “There is more competition abroad due to the abundance of models,” she stated. “In Pakistan, with fewer models available, their rates tend to be higher.” She explained that while foreign models might charge $500 per day based on working hours, Pakistani models often base their fees on the number of outfits they wear per shoot.

Concerns about the ethical environment in the entertainment industry are not new. Acclaimed writer Bee Gul recently addressed the issue of sexual exploitation, stating, “It happens everywhere I know. Women are mentally prepared for it. They know that at some point, they will have to trade off their body or beauty.” She emphasised that women from educated backgrounds are treated differently, but those without a support system are especially vulnerable.

Popular PR specialist Rana Asif, a former contestant on the reality show “Tamasha,” also shared a personal experience. In an interview, he revealed that a major brand owner had requested him “to arrange two models,” which he firmly refused.
