Main accused in Greece boat tragedy sentenced to 60 years in prison

The main culprit in the Greece boat tragedy, which claimed the lives of hundreds of Pakistani nationals, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison.

According to details, a special court of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sentenced Muhammad Mumtaz to 60 years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs. 4.2 million after founding him guilty on three counts.

Judge Muhammad Naeem Sheikh of the FIA special court delivered the verdict in the three cases concerning the Greece boat incident. The court invoked the Immigration Ordinance of 1979 to convict the main accused, Muhammad Mumtaz.

It should be noted that the accused was facing three separate cases of human smuggling at the FIA Gujranwala Police Station. Mumtaz took Rs.1 crore from four youngsters, including two brothers, to illegally send them to Italy.

Last year, on June 14, a major tragedy struck when nearly 300 Pakistanis lost their lives after a boat sank in the sea. The victims included over 50 individuals from Gujranwala Division.
