WEB DESK: A new study has highlighted a potential health hazard for those living near airports: the constant sound of aircraft taking off and landing may significantly impact heart health.

The researchers have determined that high exposure to aircraft noise causes a risk of developing poor heart function, heart attack, stroke, and irregular heartbeat. The findings have been published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. According to the research, people living near the airports experience 10 -20 per cent worse heart structure and function than people living away from such noise.

People who live near an airport generally have stiffer and thicker heart muscles that make them less efficient in pumping blood. The condition is potentially four times the chance of heart attacks or strokes.

The research extends to the broader world. “Our findings add to a growing body of evidence that aircraft noise can adversely affect heart health and our health more generally,” Dr Captur said.

The researchers proposed the accumulation of exposure time to the rich-horrible noise from the airport vicinity as a causal factor for several health hazards.

That research echoed how noise pollution should be addressed as a genuine health threat and further evaluation to derive viable solutions for noise-concerned communities living near airports.
