NEW YORK: Over the last almost two years, the $2 billion Eras tour has racked up record after record, and literally caused earthquakes- so what could Taylor Swift, the world’s biggest star, possibly do next?

“Taylor Swift just needs to rest, frankly,” said Andrew Mall, an ethnomusicologist at Northeastern University.

The sentiment seems wholly justifiable when one looks at the very definition of the achievement itself: the pop mega-star has been able to deliver nine albums in five years, together with a concert feature film.

The international cross-continental journey across the many years of a career tour that this woman just staged was not like anything else: 149 shows across the world, usually more than three hours long.

Eras tour tickets sold for sometimes exorbitant prices and drew in millions of fans, along with many more who didn’t get into them and were willing to sing along from the parking lot simply.

“I think she’s so cyclebusting that she can’t top it right away,” Mall said to AFP. “There’s just no possible way she can turn around and launch something else that has as large an impact, cultural and economic.”

According to Kristin Lieb, an expert in popular culture, gender and branding at Emerson College, the question of what comes next is not even all that fair.

“The minute after you run a marathon, or the second after you win the World Series, or very quickly after somebody gets tenure, everybody says: What’s your next project?’ she told AFP.

“I’m starting to make sense of that as a real cultural sickness.”

In an industry that’s constantly chasing the next big thing, the question of “what’s next” remains ever-present.

Swifties are still eagerly awaiting more “Taylor’s Version” albums. Since 2021, Swift has been re-recording her first six studio albums to regain ownership of the rights to her music.
