The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced a new law for women who suffer domestic violence.

Anyone who commits domestic violence will face charges. They will either go to jail or fine of up to Dh50,000 (around Rs4 million).

While imprisonment remains at six months, repeat offences within a year can now result in doubled sentences, regardless of the severity of the crime.

Details regarding the new law against domestic violence

If someone reveals confidential information about a domestic violence case or shares the victim’s identity, they will be fined at least Dh20,000 (around Rs1.5 million).

Victims can report through police, public prosecution, and dedicated protection centres. These entities are tasked with ensuring that victims receive immediate protection and support.

The new law also introduces concepts of emergency shelters and counselling services.

In 2023, it was reported that among women in the UAE, the prevalence of psychological abuse ranged from 7.5 per cent to 46 per cent.
