K-Electric has proposed a Rs 5.45 per unit increase for Karachi consumers, seeking approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) under monthly fuel adjustments.

Moreover, this hike is expected to impose an additional Rs10 billion on residents. KE has requested Rs 2.53 per unit for May and Rs2.92 per unit for June. NEPRA will review the request in a hearing on July 30.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s business community is urging the government to lower power rates, citing a staggering Rs 2,100 billion in capacity charges this year.

Furthermore, chambers of commerce in Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad have criticized the inflated tariffs, with warnings from Faisalabad’s senior trade officials about potential unrest if the issue is not addressed swiftly.
