By WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden has confirmed he will not use his executive authority to reduce or pardon his son Hunter Biden’s sentence, following a federal jury’s verdict on Tuesday. Hunter Biden was found guilty of providing false information about his drug use while purchasing a firearm in 2018, a federal offense.
Speaking at the G7 summit in Italy, President Biden stated firmly, “I respect the jury’s decision. I will abide by it. And I will not pardon him.” He further clarified in response to questions that he would not consider commuting Hunter Biden’s sentence either.
Before the jury’s decision, President Biden had preemptively stated he would not issue a pardon if Hunter Biden were found guilty. The White House had refrained from commenting on the possibility of commutation immediately after the verdict was announced.
In the United States, presidents possess the authority to commute federal sentences and issue pardons, which absolve individuals of their convictions entirely. However, these powers do not extend to cases prosecuted at the state level.

During a news conference, President Biden expressed pride in his son’s resilience, acknowledging his battle with addiction. “I’m extremely proud of my son, Hunter,” Biden affirmed. “He has overcome an addiction. He’s one of the brightest, most decent men I know. And I am satisfied that I’m not going to do anything.”
Hunter Biden, who pleaded not guilty to charges related to his background check and firearm possession, faces a potential sentence of up to 25 years, though legal experts anticipate a less severe outcome.
