In a bold move to attract international visitors, Japan is currently providing free domestic flight tickets to tourists arriving in the country. This initiative comes at a time when many nations are implementing restrictions to manage overcrowding, highlighting Japan’s unique approach to tourism promotion.
Promoting Lesser-Known Destinations
Japan Airlines is offering this enticing deal to travelers who wish to explore the country’s less frequented locales. The promotion is primarily aimed at international tourists from countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Australia, Vietnam, the Philippines, China, India, Indonesia, and Taiwan.

How to Avail the Offer
To benefit from the free domestic flights, tourists must first book round-trip international tickets. They can then book domestic flights as part of their itinerary. However, there is a stipulation: tourists must depart from major hubs within 24 hours of their arrival to avoid a $100 layover penalty.
Concerns Over Increased Crowds
Despite the attractive nature of this offer, experts warn that it could inadvertently exacerbate the problem of overcrowding in popular areas. Sara Aiko, founder of the Curated Kyoto travel agency, expressed concerns, stating, “People will continue to flock to popular destinations like Tokyo, regardless of free tickets, because they are major attractions.”
