Pakistani actor Ali Rehman Khan has opened up about the societal pressures surrounding marriage, particularly stressing that the burden to marry early falls more heavily on women.

During a recent appearance on Fuchsia Magazine, Khan shared his perspective on the expectations placed on both men and women regarding marriage, and why he believes women are subjected to greater scrutiny.

‘Marriage should be on one’s own terms’

Reflecting on his personal experience, Khan noted that while men also encounter pressure to marry, his own family never pushed him.

“Yes, it is late for my marriage, but whenever I do get married, it will be on my own terms,” he said. However, he pointed out that societal pressure, particularly from older women, commonly known as “aunties,” often revolves around marriage, with constant questions directed at both men and women.

Ali Rehman Khan underscored that this pressure is more intense for women, especially when they marry later in life. “I think women face more pressure than men if they get married late,” he remarked, adding that marriage should be a personal choice, made when the individual is ready and responsible enough to handle the commitment.

Challenges of joint family system for newlyweds

Addressing the complexities of the joint family system, Khan shared his belief that it poses challenges for newlywed couples. While acknowledging that his view might not align with traditional norms, he suggested that newlyweds should spend their early years together without the influence of extended family.

“I think the joint family system is not ideal for newly married couples. They should spend at least one or two years away, allowing time to understand each other,” Khan said, underscoring that his opinion was personal and not meant to impose on others.

In his discussion, Khan highlighted that marriage, while a beautiful relationship, should be approached with care, responsibility, and on one’s own terms.
