Israeli forces attacked a camp for internally displaced people in “safe zone” in Rafah in southern Gaza, killing at least 35 Palestinians. Many of the victims were women and children. Dozens more were wounded.
According to Al Jazeera, witnesses said Israeli forces deployed missiles in the attack on the Tal as-Sultan area. “They burned people alive… They burned an entire block in Tal as-Sultan,” one survivor told the news channel.
Israel confirmed the attack, saying it struck a Hamas compound in Rafah. It acknowledged reports that civilians were wounded when a fire broke out and said the incident is under investigation.
The Israeli army has also issued a second statement on the attack in Rafah, saying two senior Hamas officials were killed in a “precise airstrike”.
It said that included Hamas’s chief of staff in the West Bank, Yassin Rabia.
Earlier in the day, Hamas launched a series of rockets from the Gaza Strip at the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, which caused light damage.
