Is PTA Permanently Banning X in Pakistan?

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has responded to the rumours circulating on social media regarding a complete ban on the renowned social media platform, X (formerly Twitter).

According to the social media reports, the telecommunication authority and the law enforcement agencies have recommended a complete ban on X for failing to comply with Pakistani laws.

Responding to these rumours, a spokesperson for PTA stated that the authority hasn’t made any such recommendation. “The news circulating about PTA recommending a complete ban on X is baseless and untrue,” the spokesperson clarified.

The spokesperson added that PTA hasn’t held any discussion with the Ministry of Interior or any other institution regarding a complete ban on the social media platform.

It should be noted that X has been blocked in Pakistan since February 17. Last month, the Interior Ministry told the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that the social media platform was banned in the country over its “failure to adhere to the lawful directives of the government of Pakistan.”
