Around 30 cases of pneumonia have been reported in Karachi, according to the head of emergencies at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), while talking to a local news channel.

Dr Khalid Shafi, the Secretary General of the Pakistan Pediatrics Association, stated that there is an increase in pneumonia cases during the months of October, November, and December each year. He also mentioned that the symptoms of pneumonia include coughing up green, yellow, or red mucus, fever, sweating, chills, difficulty breathing, and chest pain caused by deep breathing or coughing.

While talking to a private news channel, D Khalid Shafi stated that pneumonia is a life-threatening disease, causing more than 70,000 deaths every year in Pakistan. He highlighted that children under 2 years of age and individuals over 65 years old are at a higher risk of pneumonia.

He also highlighted that treatment includes oral medications as well as injections, depending on the severity of the case.

According to the head of emergencies at NICH, the hospital is witnessing around 30 cases of pneumonia daily, while Civil Hospital Karachi is recording 10 to 15 cases per day.

What is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a lung infection in which the air sacs fill with pus, leading to symptoms such as cough, fever, fatigue, nausea, and shortness of breath. Adults over the age of 65 and children under the age of 2 who exhibit these signs and symptoms are at greater risk of pneumonia. Prevention measures include practising good hygiene, getting vaccinated, and avoiding smoking.
