Imran Khan, my last hope is the Supreme Court of Pakistan

WEB DESK: Imran Khan initiated the dialogue by expressing confusion over the accusation of political point-scoring during the previous hearing. He sought clarity on the term, prompting the Chief Justice to suggest continuing the conversation in Urdu for better understanding.

Imran Khan further lamented to the court about feeling unjustly characterized as irresponsible, leading to the decision not to broadcast the proceedings live. I am not such a dangerous person.

Justice Aminuddin and the Chief Justice redirected Imran Khan to focus solely on the case at hand, emphasizing that judges refrain from explaining their decisions directly. Imran Khan persisted, highlighting his opposition to the government’s appeal in the NAB amendments case.

In response, Justice Athar Minallah raised concerns about potential repercussions should the amendments pass, citing a significant financial loss. Imran Khan advocated for Supreme Court oversight in appointing the NAB Chairman but faced skepticism from Justice Athar Manullah regarding the necessity of his proposed changes.

Imran Khan countered by citing his personal experiences with NAB, questioning its reliability. Justice Jamal Mandukhel suggested Imran Khan had matured since his incarceration, prompting him to reflect on historical political parallels and express his concerns over corruption and capital flight.

Imran Khan advocated for a reformed NAB and a specialized anti-corruption institution. However, Justice Athar Minallah reminded him of past controversies regarding appointments, emphasizing the need for integrity in such processes.

He said, “God forbid, if something happens to this country, its responsibility will not lie with politicians but with us.”

Justice Jamal Mandokhel questioned, “Who created the political system?” Justice Athar Minallah expressed, “Unfortunately, you are in jail, and people have expectations from you.” Imran Khan replied, “If I may speak frankly, we are all looking towards you.”

Justice Hasan Azhar asked Imran Khan why he didn’t oppose the NAB bill in Parliament. Imran Khan explained, “I want to tell you the reason for this, the situation had become dire. With a GDP growth of 0.6%, the government was toppled under a conspiracy. Parliament couldn’t respond to this government’s conspiracy by approaching it.” Imran Khan highlighted, “My last hope is the Supreme Court.” Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel expressed disappointment, stating, “We are disappointed with the politicians. If unfortunately, we also fail, what will happen?”
