The petition was organised by Zulfi Bukhari, Khan’s advisor on international affairs. He has been leading a media campaign in the UK to promote Khan’s candidacy while highlighting his achievements. Among the signatories are 176 alumni and students, who assert that Khan is qualified and deserving of the role.
The initiative follows a counter-campaign led by Khurram Butt, chairman of the Youth Coordination Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) UK. He distributed leaflets criticizing Khan and questioning his suitability for the position.
The petition outlines Khan’s notable accomplishments, including his cricketing success, the establishment of Pakistan’s first cancer hospital, and his tenure as Chancellor of the University of Bradford. It emphasizes Khan’s dedication to public service, education, and social impact.
Bukhari expressed that the broad support for Khan’s candidacy reflects his credibility and the significant media attention he has received. He believes allowing Khan to run would enhance Oxford’s commitment to diversity and democratic values.
