Senior analyst, Muneeb Farooq revealed that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Founder Imran Khan and his party has realised that the government is preparing to amend anti-terrorism laws to bring those involved in the May 9 incidents before military courts.
In a recent statement, Farooq mentioned that, in light of this situation, Imran Khan has urged his supporters to launch a decisive attack to create chaos, hoping the government will back down from its decision to refer cases to military courts.
He also noted that if Imran Khan ends up in the military’s hands, his connections with other political parties and supporters would be completely severed due to this he is extremely worried.
Other developments:
Earlier, the government proposed authorising the law enforcement agencies (LEAs), armed forces, and civil armed forces to detain individuals for up to three months through the amendment bill.
Later, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) urged the federal government to withdraw the recently introduced Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2024 in the National Assembly, calling it a “gross violation of the right to due process” and “fair trial”.
The human rights body said it recognises the urgent need to address the country’s deteriorating security and law and order given the recent upsurge in militancy and significant loss of life. However, it added, “Preventive detention is not the solution as such powers are liable to be abused”.
