The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Monday condemned the arrest of Pakistani human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Abdul Hadi, demanding their immediate and unconditional release.
“HRCP strongly condemns the arrest of human rights lawyers Imaan Mazari and Abdul Hadi on vague charges of ‘creating a security risk.’ Both are committed, well-respected human rights defenders, whose arbitrary arrest is symptomatic of the rapidly shrinking space for activists in Pakistan. Ms. Imaan Mazari and Mr. Abdul Hadi must be released immediately and unconditionally, and all charges against them dropped,” wrote HRCP in a post on social media platform ‘X’ formally known as Twitter.
Islamabad police have arrested Imaan Mazari and her husband on Monday afternoon. She was taken into custody by the Aabpara police. According to police, both were detained in connection with a case of assault on a traffic officer.
A case had previously been registered against Iman Mazari and her husband. The police have transferred Iman Mazari to the Women’s Police Station.
