The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning about a significant rise in smog levels across the country, primarily due to a lack of rainfall.
According to a PMD spokesperson, the smog, a mixture of smoke and fog, typically forms from November to mid-December and is expected to intensify due to ongoing dry weather.

The spokesperson highlighted that industrial emissions, vehicle pollution, and favorable weather conditions are likely to worsen air pollution, posing serious threats to public health and the environment. He noted that the combination of lower temperatures, limited wind movement, and higher humidity will contribute to the build-up of pollutants in the atmosphere.
These pollutants could create thick layers of smog over major cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, and Faisalabad.
The expected surge in smog levels may lead to a rise in respiratory problems, including asthma and other pollution-related health issues. Vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions, are particularly at risk. The spokesperson also warned of reduced visibility on roads, increasing the likelihood of traffic accidents and disrupting outdoor activities.
