Pakistan is set to welcome its first locally produced four-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) in December this year. The announcement came during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, focused on the use of EVs in the country.

According to a government statement, since 2022, 49 licenses have been issued for the local production of two and three-wheeled electric vehicles, with 25 factories already operational. The first license for the production of four-wheeled EVs was granted in September 2024, paving the way for the first locally-made electric car to be available by the end of this year.

The EV sector is rapidly growing in Pakistan and has the potential to reshape the country’s automotive industry. In another development, Dewan Farooque Motors Limited (DFML) has begun producing electric vehicles at its assembly plant after getting approval from the Engineering Development Board (EDB).
