The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has clarified that Urdu has never been a compulsory subject at the undergraduate level. This clarification was issued following misleading news reports suggesting the removal of Urdu as a mandatory subject in higher education.

The HEC stated that Urdu continues to be taught up to the intermediate level, but it has never been part of the compulsory curriculum for undergraduate programs.

The HEC also confirmed that all key stakeholders were consulted during the development of the HEC Undergraduate Education Policy V 1.1 (2023). The finalized policy reflects their input and allows flexibility for universities to add optional subjects, including Urdu, if required.

There are no restrictions from HEC regarding the inclusion of additional courses.

Furthermore, the HEC offers a specialized degree program in Urdu at the undergraduate level. A well-structured curriculum for this program is available on the HEC website for interested students.

It added that the primary goal of the HEC’s education policy is to enhance student learning by promoting the application of conceptual knowledge, professional skills, and ethical values.
