ISLAMABAD – The Interior Ministry has disclosed significant expenditure details, totaling over Rs 927 million, on the renovation of Parliament House over the past five years, according to media reports.

Annual Renovation Costs

The disclosure, presented to the National Assembly (NA) through a written statement, outlines the annual renovation costs of the historic parliamentary building.

  • 2019-20: Rs 108 million
  • 2020-21: Rs 171 million
  • 2021-22: Rs 286 million
  • 2022-23: Rs 302 million
  • 2023-24 (ongoing): Rs 60 million

Additional Funding and Expenditures

Reports from 2022 indicated an additional allocation of Rs 5 billion for Parliament House in the fiscal year 2022-23. This supplementary funding covered various categories, including employee salaries, operational costs, and allowances, highlighting the substantial financial commitment required to maintain the parliamentary facilities.

Parliament’s Structure and Funding

The Parliament of Pakistan, comprising the Senate (Upper House) and the NA (Lower House), has received increased funding compared to previous years to cover rising operational and maintenance expenses. This enhanced funding underscores the importance of ensuring the functionality and preservation of the country’s legislative nerve center.

Renaming Initiative

In a notable development last year, then Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani initiated efforts to rename the Parliament House building. He formed a parliamentary committee tasked with proposing a new name that resonates with Pakistan’s cultural heritage, national values, and embodies the nation’s unity. This initiative reflects broader endeavors to align the identity of Parliament House more closely with the country’s rich cultural and national ethos.
