Govt responds to reports of social media firewall in Pakistan

Information Minister Atta Tarar has debunked reports suggesting the installation of a Chinese-style firewall to regulate social media in Pakistan.

In a light-hearted manner, Tarar referenced the Great Wall of China, denying any discussions regarding such measures during the recent Prime Minister’s visit to China.

Contrary to earlier reports, which indicated the installation of a national firewall on various internet service providers (ISPs) to filter content on platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and X, Tarar clarified that the aim is to block undesirable content from reaching a broader audience.

During a press conference in Islamabad, Tarar highlighted Pakistan’s resilience amid internal and external challenges. He underscored the success of the Prime Minister’s visit to China, emphasizing the strengthening Pakistan-China ties.

Tarar elaborated on the discussions during the Prime Minister’s three-hour meeting with the Chinese President, focusing on upgrading the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

In addressing social media regulations, Tarar dismissed speculations about a Chinese-style firewall and instead highlighted the importance of defamation laws to combat misinformation and hate speech. He hinted at potential future legislation in this regard.
