Govt imposes 18% GST on packaged pulses, rice, sugar

WEB DESK: The government has imposed an 18% GST on all basic commodities, including packaged pulses, rice, flour, and sugar, in the new budget.

The Senate Standing Committee on Finance has also approved a proposal to ban non-filers from traveling abroad. In addition, non-filers mobile SIMs, as well as their electricity and gas connections, will be disconnected.

During the committee meeting, FBR Chairman Amjad Zubair Tiwana revealed that an 18% tax has been imposed on all food items, including packaged pulses, rice, spices, salt, pepper, flour, and sugar. No additional tax has been levied on loose items sold in regular shops.

Furthermore, the Standing Committee recommended reducing the 18% GST on baby formula milk, to which the FBR Chairman responded that poor mothers do not use formula milk for their children. If companies reduce the price of milk, the tax will also be reduced. Senator Farooq Naek suggested blacklisting companies involved in tax evasion. Sales tax is an indirect tax that consumers will have to pay.
