Govt considers stopping monitoring of milk, beef, and mutton prices: Report

The federal government is reportedly planning to deregulate the prices of milk, beef, and mutton by stopping their monitoring.

According to a national daily, this proposal was discussed in a meeting few days ago. During the meeting, officials from federal and provincial governments agreed that “deregulating red meat and milk prices is necessary to support the development of the livestock sector.”

One of the officials who attended the meeting told the national daily that there was an emphasis on adopting a regulatory mechanism to ensure the quality of milk, meat, and mutton. Furthermore, the officials will soon meet with the consumers’ associations and meat processors for their views regarding the proposal.

Dr Muhammad Akram, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, revealed that the Ministry of National Food, Security and Research (MNFSR) were in talks with stakeholders to deregulate milk and red meat prices.

Akram explained that regulation of meat and milk prices are one of the main hurdles in farmers and investors making large investments. It is due to the fact that the profit margin is low and insignificant compared to the volume of their investment.
