Goods transporters have declared a wheel-jam strike starting on July 25.
During a press conference in Gujranwala on Tuesday, the Goods Transporters Association announced the strike in response to unresolved issues and demands in the transport sector.
Key demands
Goods transporters have outlined several key demands that must be addressed before they will resume normal operations.
Moreover, they have stated that no bookings or deliveries will be processed until their demands are met:
- The transporters are calling for a standardised system of weight measurement across Pakistan, arguing that the current lack of uniformity in weight regulations creates inconsistencies and problems for the industry.
- The association has requested the withdrawal of challenging powers from patrolling police, complaining that the motorway police, patrolling police, and traffic police issue unnecessary challans.
- Transporters have highlighted the issue of heavy fines, noting that those transporting goods from Karachi to Gujranwala face fines of up to Rs50,000, which they argue is excessive and burdensome.
- There is a call for customs authorities to cease what they term as “illegal checking” of goods, which transporters believe is unfair and impedes their operations.
