Five Japanese Survive Karachi Suicide Attack; Two Terrorists Killed

A suicide bombing occurred on Friday in Karachi’s Landhi area near Murtaza Chowrangi, targeting a vehicle carrying five Japanese nationals. Remarkably, all five escaped harm. Local police confirmed that the attack involved two terrorists, resulting in one assailant’s death.

Details of the Attack

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) East, Azfar Mahesar, shared that the Japanese were traveling from their Zamzama residence to the Export Processing Zone in a Hiace van, escorted by private security guards. Although the Japanese were safe, one security guard suffered injuries. Additionally, Asif Aijaz Shaikh, DIG of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), reported that a police unit from Sharafi Goth neutralized a backup suicide bomber, enhancing the group’s safety.

Scene Response

Raja Umar Khattab, head of CTD, reported that the attackers initiated their assault as the Japanese convoy passed through the area. After a failed bombing, the second attacker opened fire but security forces quickly subdued him. Khattab noted the attacker was armed with about 15 rounds and grenades, highlighting the effective response by police and security guards in averting a worse outcome.

Official Reactions

Police spokesperson Abrar Hussain Baloch stated that the Japanese were swiftly relocated to a secure area under police protection. He praised the immediate action of the police unit and the vigilance of the security personnel. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack, lauding the prompt police intervention. Former Foreign Minister and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also condemned the incident, emphasizing the importance of protecting foreign nationals and sustaining strong international relations with Japan.

Government Response and Security Measures

Following the incident, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah requested a detailed report and called for stronger security measures for foreign nationals. Sindh’s Transport and Interior Ministers have committed to maintaining strict security protocols to prevent future incidents. Sindh Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has implemented enhanced security protocols, including extensive snap checks and increased patrols, especially during Friday prayers, to address the ongoing security challenges in the region.
