Farmers Announce Nationwide Protests Against Wheat Import Policy

Farmers across the country are set to take to the streets following a nationwide protest call by Kissan Ittehad Chairman Khalid Khokhar.

Speaking at a press conference, Khokhar announced countrywide protests from May 10. He said that farmers will begin their protest against the government’s decision to import wheat instead of buying it from the farmers.

He also demanded strict punishment for those involved in corruption in the import of wheat. According to the Kissan Ittehad Chairman, “wheat mafia” made a profit of Rs100 billion from imports, while Pakistan incurred a loss of approximately $1 billion.

Khokhar slammed the government for denying farmers’ their rightful earnings by deciding to import the commodity. He stated that they have no other choice but to take to the streets.

Khokhar added that despite reaching out to top government officials, including the prime minister, army chief, director general of ISI and minister of food security, their concerns weren’t addressed.

He also invited the civil society, media, lawyers and business community to be part of their protest. The Kissan Ittehad Chairman announced that their peaceful protest will continue until their demands are fulfilled.
