Following his re-election as the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief for another five years, Maulana Fazlur Rehman has condemned the current government, labeling the existing parliament as a “fake” body lacking a legitimate mandate for significant constitutional amendments.
In a press conference after the party’s intra-party elections on Sunday, Fazl emphasised, “We want a fresh [general] election. This parliament does not deserve this huge constitutional amendment.”
The government is pushing a proposed constitutional package amid speculation about an extension for Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, who is set to retire in October. This follows a request from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for the early notification of the next top judge.

Despite extensive efforts by the ruling coalition, including multiple meetings between leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Fazl, no agreement has been reached.
Fazl detailed ongoing discussions with the PPP and PTI, indicating that the JUI-F would collaborate with these parties to draft amendments aimed at providing relief to the public while reinforcing democracy and safeguarding parliamentary sovereignty. He warned, “Judicial reforms should not be individual-centric.”
