In Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s first month in office, the average electricity cost per unit in Pakistan surged to a record Rs42.59.
According to Power Division documents, March 2024 saw the highest electricity rates ever paid by citizens in the country.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) received a comprehensive report detailing the average electricity tariff for the fiscal year 2024.
The data showed that March 2024 had the highest per-unit electricity cost, factoring in base tariffs along with monthly and quarterly adjustments.

For March 2024, the base tariff was Rs28.35 per unit. Additional monthly adjustments amounted to Rs7.01 per unit, and quarterly adjustments contributed Rs4.40 per unit, resulting in a total of Rs42.59 per unit.
On the other hand, the lowest average electricity cost per unit during the previous financial year was Rs33.66, observed in September 2023. This substantial rise in electricity prices highlights the increasing costs and adjustments throughout the fiscal year, greatly affecting household utility bills.
