The federal government has decided to revoke the recent electricity tariff increase for households consuming up to 200 units per month.
The approval to withdraw the hike was given during a cabinet meeting convened by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to sources, the government plans to offer a subsidy of around Rs 50 billion to alleviate the impact of high electricity bills. This relief measure will be available from July to September 2024 for consumers using 200 units or less each month.

Earlier, on July 4, the federal cabinet had approved a significant increase in electricity rates for residential users consuming between 100 and 500 units monthly.
The revised base rate was proposed at Rs 48.84 per unit, which would rise to Rs 57.63 per unit including sales tax. With additional charges and taxes, the highest electricity rate could have surpassed Rs 65 per unit.
