ECP raises seven objections to PTI’s intra-party elections, bat symbol restoration

ISLAMABAD: The controversy surrounding the PTI’s intra-party elections and the restoration of its ‘bat’ as election symbol has deepened, with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) raising seven objections to the process conducted on March 3.

Details of the objections have come to light, revealing concerns over the PTI’s registration and its failure to submit necessary documents for investment under section 202. Additionally, questions have been raised about the compliance of the PTI’s General Body Meeting on January 31, 2024, with Section 208, which establishes the Party Electoral College.

According to the ECP, the appointment of the Federal Chief Election Commissioner was made based on the agreement of the General Body, while the National Council holds the authority to recommend candidates for this position.

The status of both the General Body and the Federal Chief Election Commissioner remains unclear, prompting further inquiry. Moreover, the ECP has questioned whether the General Body possesses the authority to appoint the Chief Organiser and determine the Federal Chief Election Commissioner.

Amidst the concerns, the ECP is seeking clarity on the PTI’s stance regarding five specific requests related to intra-party elections. Additionally, there are queries regarding the absence of action against the PTI under Section 208, raising broader questions about accountability within the party’s internal electoral processes.
