Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the House in the Senate, Muhammad Ishaq Dar, announced on Sunday that close to 100 amendments would be introduced to the nearly 150-year-old Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The goal is to ensure affordable and swift justice for the general public.

Speaking after the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment in the Senate, Dar referred to the changes as a “curtain-raiser” for broader reforms. He emphasised the need for input from all political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in shaping the proposed amendments.

Dar, also serving as the foreign minister, detailed that the amendments would focus on timely filing and hearing of appeals, ensuring courts adhere to strict deadlines for resolving cases.

Regarding the constitutional amendment, Dar explained that while a federal constitutional bench will be established, provinces could set up their own similar forums by passing a resolution when prepared.

Addressing concerns over the amendment being person-specific, Dar dismissed such assumptions. He praised the government’s allies and opposition parties for working towards a consensus document, revealing that multiple drafts had been prepared before finalising the amendment.
