Amid a severe heatwave gripping Delhi, the government has ordered an immediate shutdown of all private and government schools for summer vacations.
The directive, issued by the Department of Education, emphasised that some schools in the national capital have been operating despite clear instructions to close from May 11 to June 30.
Northern India, including Delhi, is currently enduring a brutal heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 45°C over the weekend. On Sunday, the Najafgarh district in Delhi recorded a staggering temperature of 47.8°C, marking the highest in the country this season.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the extreme heat spell is expected to persist throughout the week. Indian summers, typically extending from March to September, are known for their intense heat and humidity. This year, the IMD has projected that the country will face longer and more severe heatwaves, raising concerns over public health and safety.
