According to an official document, the  decision to install a national internet firewall was made during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The documents are from a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office regarding the national firewall. A letter sent on November 4, 2020, to the information technology secretary, outlines a meeting that took place on October 22, 2020, concerning the National Firewall System.

The letter directs the IT ministry to seek approval from the relevant authority and to evaluate various options for implementing the firewall, incorporating recommendations from stakeholders.

The letter also underscored the need to develop and install the National Firewall System and to create a national social media platform similar to WeChat.

On Sunday, State Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja clarified that the government has not restricted internet speeds or implemented any shutdowns.

During a press conference in Islamabad, she explained that the slowdown many users experience is due to the high volume of VPN traffic, which is affecting overall internet performance.
