The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a cyclonic storm developing in the Bay of Bengal is likely to reach the coasts of West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh on Sunday, May 26, as a severe cyclonic storm.
In response, the IMD has issued rainfall warnings for the coastal districts of West Bengal, neighboring districts of North Odisha, and regions in North East India. According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is expected across most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall anticipated in isolated locations within the coastal districts of West Bengal, North Odisha, Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur on May 26 and 27.
It is also important to note that Bangladesh’s neighboring countries, India and Pakistan, are currently experiencing intense heatwaves. In India, at least nine deaths in Rajasthan are suspected to have resulted from the extreme heat.
In Pakistan, nearly 26 districts are suffering under a severe heatwave, with the current spell of scorching temperatures expected to persist until May 30. Temperatures are predicted to reach 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) in at least two cities in the southern province of Sindh on Friday.
