By The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged Pakistani authorities to “promptly and impartially investigate the death threats and online harassment” directed at veteran journalist and anchorperson Hamid Mir, ensuring his safety.
This call comes in response to Mir, the host of Geo News’ “Capital Talk,” disclosing to CPJ that he has received numerous death threats via social media, along with warnings regarding his personal safety.
Although Mir reported these threats to Islamabad police last week, no formal first information report (FIR) has been filed, and no investigation has commenced, according to the journalist organization.
Mir, aged 57, also informed CPJ that he observed two individuals filming him while he was in his car near his residence in Islamabad last week. He noted that they fled upon his approach.
“The threats and online campaign of hate against one of Pakistan’s most prominent television anchors highlight the severity of intimidation and pressure endured by journalists in Pakistan,” remarked CPJ Asia Program Coordinator Beh Lih Yi.
“Pakistani security agencies must promptly address those attempting to silence Hamid Mir and hold them accountable.”
Mir, a seasoned journalist, has survived at least two assassination attempts. He was shot in 2014, and in 2012, explosives were discovered under his car by his driver.
