Climate change is making each day longer, though the change is very small—just milliseconds.

This slight increase in day length could potentially affect things like internet traffic, financial transactions, and GPS navigation, which all depend on precise timekeeping.

Normally, the Earth’s day gets longer over time due to the moon’s gravitational pull on the planet’s oceans and land.

However, because of global warming, ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting and redistributing water from the polar regions to the oceans near the equator. This makes the Earth slightly fatter and causes it to rotate more slowly, which in turn lengthens the day.
