Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi summoned the first meeting of the 13-member Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on November 5, hours after the National Assembly speaker submitted names of four parliamentarians and a woman for the commission.
According to the notification issued by the JCP secretary, a copy of which is available with Azaad English, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan will meet at 2 pm on Tuesday in the Supreme Court building.
The commission in its maiden meeting will deliberate on the nomination of judges for constitutional benches in the top court, the establishment of the secretariat of the commission, and any other matter with the permission of the CJP, the notification read.
Earlier today, NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq nominated four lawmakers from the National Assembly and Senate, along with one woman on a reserved seat, for the JCP.
The commission includes Leader of Opposition Omar Ayub and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Sheikh Aftab from the lower house. From the Senate, Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Farooq H Naek and Leader of Opposition Shibli Faraz will be part of the judicial commission.
A former member of the Senate, Roshan Khursheed Barocha, has been nominated for the reserved seat. These nominations were made by the Speaker NA under clause (2) of Article 175A of the Constitution.
Along with the chief justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, the commission also consists of three senior-most SC judges, the Federal Minister for Law and Justice, the Attorney General for Pakistan, a senior Supreme Court advocate to be nominated by the Pakistan Bar Council (for two years).
The addition of parliamentarians in JCP came following the enactment of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
