Chinese researchers find cure for diabetes

Chinese scientists have achieved a major medical breakthrough by curing a patient’s diabetes through pioneering cell therapy.

This pioneering treatment, detailed in the journal Cell Discovery on April 30, is the result of a collaborative effort between Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, the Centre for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Renji Hospital.

As per a report by the South China Morning Post, the patient received the cell transplant in July 2021. Surprisingly, just eleven week later, he no longer needed external insulin.

During the next year, he gradually reduced and eventually stopped oral medication for blood sugar control. “Follow-up examinations showed that the patient’s pancreatic islet function was effectively restored,” said Yin, one of the lead researchers.

It’s been 33 months since the patient stopped using insulin. The research has garnered praise from Timothy Kieffer, a professor at the University of British Columbia.

“I think this study represents an important advance in the field of cell therapy for diabetes,” Kieffer said.
