The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has issued notices to 20 brands for potentially misleading discount practices during “End of Season Sales.” The CCP acted after retailers advertised discounts as “up to a percentage,” which may fall under deceptive marketing, violating Section 10 of the Competition Act.
This practice, known as ‘Bait and Switch Advertising,’ involves promoting an attractive offer that the seller does not genuinely intend to provide, leading buyers to less desirable alternatives.

A random survey conducted by the CCP’s Market Intelligence Unit in the twin cities revealed that the maximum advertised discounts were only available on a limited selection of less popular items, while more sought-after products had minimal or no discounts.
Some brands, however, offered flat discounts with proper disclosures, which the CCP appreciated. The CCP has urged brands to avoid misleading promotions and provide clear information on discounts, ensuring transparency about actual prices and stock availability.
Retailers failing to comply with this directive risk enforcement action under the Competition Act. The CCP also advises consumers to stay vigilant when availing discounts to avoid falling victim to deceptive marketing tactics, reinforcing its commitment to protecting fair competition and consumer rights.
