Pakistan starts crocodile farming

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has started crocodile farming to boost the leather and tourism industry.

In Jacobabad, one of Sindh’s hottest districts, a local landowner has launched this unique venture. The farm, called Bhambhore Farmhouse, is located in a nearby village.

The crocodiles, naturally suited to swamps and ponds, now roam freely within the farm. They take five years to mature, growing up to 21 feet long and weighing nearly one ton.

Their skins are highly valuable and used for luxury leather products. The farm owner aims to raise them professionally to meet international standards.

Currently, the farm has ten imported crocodiles. Once they start laying eggs, their population will grow rapidly. If successful, this farm could boost Pakistan’s economy.

The crocodile farming is mostly popular in African countries. Around 47 African countries, largely South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have the crocodile farming industry.

China is the biggest export market. Almost 85% of exports of these countries go to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan combined.
